Foundation for Successful Solutions Location: California (CA)
Abstract:
Since 2001, Project T.E.C.H. has served more than 600 individuals and organization through our training classes, computer donations, technical support, and media services.
While serving a predominately African American and Latino population, our participants have also included many seniors, and youth with developmental disabilities.
Through our mission and in providing technology access and training, we demonstrate that technology is tool to be used for personal and professional growth, for academic achievement, creative expression, civic engagement, and much more -- for bridging the 'divides' that prevent individuals and families from reaching their full potential.
We also recognize that every person may not aspire to be high-tech gurus or corporate leaders. Our goal is to train, teach, encourage, and guide -- in a way that provides the knowledge and skills one needs to make good and wise decisions for oneself, one's family, and community.
Foundation for Successful Solutions-Project T.E.C.H. (Project T.E.C.H.) is committed to providing programs and services that prepare people for living and working together in this new millennium. Project T.E.C.H. has been operating its community technology program at the Tom Bradley Youth and Family Center since Spring 2001, and at the South Seas House since Summer 2004.
Beyond technology skills development and its benefits (high tech), the success of Project T.E.C.H. centers are equally measured by the relationships formed in the process--the sense of self-worth and community that develops among participants (high touch).
Our target populations include economically and educationally disadvantaged families, children and youth, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and those open and willing to build relationships across race, class, gender, ability, and culture.
Project T.E.C.H. programs focus on:
Technology access, literacy & fluency
Literacy & communication skills
Employment skills development
Education & vocational training
Information & Communications
Technologies
Community collaboration & networking

Franklin Community Action Corporation's (FCAC) Family Focus
Greenfield Family Center Location: Massachusetts (MA)
Abstract:
FCAC's Family Focus project was launched in early 2001 to increase computer literacy skills for families with young children living in Franklin County, a predominantly rural area in the western part of Massachusetts. The project has drawn participants from FCAC's Head Start and childhood education programs.
Services/Activities. Currently, Family Focus has two areas of activity. Volunteers at the Greenfield Family Center assist parents in learning how to use computers. Parents can set up e-mail accounts, search the Web for jobs or child-related information, use the computers to write resumes, or use other software programs. The other area of activity involves Greenfield Even Start, also housed in the facility, which provides learning opportunities for young parents who lack a HS diploma or GED. The project helps these young parents with computer basics, and permits them to use computers three days weekly to do on-line job searches or type papers for their classes to obtain GEDs.
Goal. To increase computer literacy skills for families with young children who lack them and who live in Greenfield and the surrounding area.
Future Plans. These include expanding computer literacy classes for Even Start participants as well as either providing computer training for local community members or having other trainers/agencies use the facilities to provide such training.

Free Press Location: Abstract:
Free Press is a national, nonpartisan organization working to reform the media. Through education, organizing and advocacy, we promote diverse and independent media ownership, strong public media, and universal access to communications.Media play a huge role in our lives. TV, radio, the Internet, movies, books and newspapers inform and influence our ideas, opinions, values and beliefs. They shape our understanding of the world and give us the information we need to hold our leaders accountable. But our media system is failing. This broken system isn't natural. For far too long, corrupt media policy has been made behind closed doors in the public's name but without our informed consent. If we want better media, we need better media policies. If we want better policies, we must engage more people in policy debates and demand better media.
