Culver City, CA
Location: USA
Abstract:

Culver City is the first community on the west side of Los Angeles to provide free public Internet access, in an effort to differentiate the city from neighboring areas, attract new business, enhance visitors' experiences, and offer businesses an added incentive to locate in the city. Notably, Culver City — “The Heart of Screenland” — has added software to monitor downloading and to filter illegal content on its citywide Wi-Fi network, making it among the first to do so in the country. The solution ultimately protects copyright and enables control over the network. In November 2004, the Culver City Project received the 2004 InfoWorld 100 Award as an innovative project highlighting the resourcefulness of the IT community.

Cupertino, CA
Location: USA
Abstract:

The mission of Cupertino’s wireless network is simply defined: to ensure affordable broadband access is readily available to all Cupertino residents. The city contracted MetroFi to deploy a $250,000 network over 7 square miles of the city, an average cost of $20 per home. MetroFi and the city expect a 3 year ROI cycle. Project objectives include marketing and selling low-cost, high-speed Internet access to consumers in an “open access” model (allowing consumers a choice of service providers), supporting additional value-added services on the same network platform including potential public hot zones, and ensuring the possibility of other potential municipal uses.

Denver, CO
Location: USA
Abstract:

Installed in 2001–2002, Ricochet Networks’ 900-MHz proprietary wireless network currently serves more than 6,000 users in the Denver metro area. Ricochet has received approval from the City of Denver to incorporate Wi-Fi, WiMAX, and other broadband services into its right-of-way contract to allow it to deliver wireless services across the City and County of Denver. The new network will begin rolling out in the Capitol Hill and Golden Triangle downtown neighborhoods—a 2.5-square-mile area—and will ultimately cover 154 square miles. Ricochet will provide fee-based wireless-broadband services in Denver. Users will migrate to the new network from Ricochet's existing infrastructure.

Disabilityart.com
Location: United States
Abstract:

Disablityart.com is a website which creates and compiles positive images of persons with disabilities in everyday-life situations and inclusive settings. The site facilitates the purchase of the images in collections in CD-Rom format or on a by-image basis. The images can be used to communicate the work of an organization (as is the case with other groups, such as Wheelchairnet), whether that be on brochures, in existing publications, on web pages, or in training and educational materials. In essence, the site facilitates the transfer of information through dynamic visual expressions, thereby raising awareness of different types of disabilities and offering an effective educational tool.

Galt, CA
Location: USA
Abstract:

Galt is an agricultural community forty miles southeast of Sacramento. In 2005, local broadband provider Softcom Internet Communications Inc. began installing a citywide broadband-wireless network through a novel approach. To sidestep lengthy negotiations to access city assets to mount equipment, it offered selected homeowners and businesses a significant discount on their monthly broadband access fees in exchange for permission to install broadband-wirless equipment on their rooftops. More than four square miles were covered with a high-capacity, carrier-grade wireless cloud offering Wi-Fi to over 4,000 homes for $24.95 per month.

Houston, North Forest Independent School District
Location: USA
Abstract:

The neighborhoods around the North Forest Independent School District in northeast Houston may be among the city's poorest, but the district sees a significant opportunity for educational, social and economic development through the City of Houston's broadband-wireless plans. Wireless infrastructure paired with Web-based accounts provided by Simdesk can give a boost to the district's 10,000 students and their families. Students receive SimHouston accounts to access and submit assignments online anytime, anywhere through shared classroom folders. The accounts enable communication between the teacher and the student, the teacher and the parent, the superintendent and the community, and so on. An "S-Drive" enables file sharing between teachers, parents and students. With those folders, homework is always there, lesson plans are always there.

HumanWare's Trekker
Location: United States
Abstract:

Built from a concept originally conceived by the European Space Association, HumanWare's Trekker is a revolutionary new travel tool for the blind that uses GPS and talking menus to give directions, pinpoint user location, and provide real-time information on surroundings. The Trekker is the first GPS-based product to offer digital maps to the visually impaired in a fully portable application. The device is made up of a lightweight pocket PC comfortably worn over the shoulder on a strap. It announces the names of streets, intersections, addresses, stores, businesses, restaurants, and area attractions as they come up. There is also a search function and a "where am I?" key that can pinpoint one's location. The Trekker even warns of dead ends and allows the user to take notes through a built-in microphone or Braille entry, which are then stored for future reference. The Trekker is the most widely used GPS system for the blind today.
